The Summer Art Collection at Gibson’s presents an engaging selection of Australian and international art works, sculpture, photography and prints guaranteed to surprise and inspire.

Included in the sale is lot 9, the historically significant portrait of Robert Chirnside and the Melbourne Hunt Club, 1882. Robert was the nephew of Thomas Chirnside, the well-known pastoralist and founder of Werribee Park. Another historically important piece is lot 5, the painting by Harry Royall of Victoria Cross recipient John Carroll. Titled in Carroll’s own hand ‘How I won the V.C. at Massines, Private John Carroll’ it shows Carroll in action storming the German bunker and capturing the gun amid exploding shells.

Lot 4, Hugh Sawrey’s bronze ‘The Man Who Steadies the Lead’ is a fine example of the artist’s work and a powerful representation of the iconic Australian drover, one of only twelve cast. Lot 3, an unusual painted scrimshaw horn shows, among other things, a scene of a waddy fight between two men of the Lake Hindmarsh tribe.

Modern and contemporary Australian artists are well represented in this auction with works by John Coburn, David Rankin, John Beard, Lawrence Daws, Tony Tuckson, David Bromley, Matthew Johnson, Robert Doble, Jeffrey Makin and Andrew Browne.

Lot 13 is Adam Cullen’s irreverent and confronting work ‘Hygienically Sealed for Your Convenience + Hygiene, 1984’. Winner of the 2000 Archibald Prize and known for painting criminals and underdogs, his canvases have sold to the likes of Elton John and Amanda Vanstone. This painting broke the artists auction record when it was sold in 2007.

Works on paper and prints include some fine examples by William Dobell, Arthur Boyd, Robert Jacks, Charles Blackman and Frank Hinder.

A collection of photography adds another layer of interest to this sale and includes examples by Max Dupain, Lisa Tomasetti and Robert McFarlane as well international works from the Marilyn Monroe series by Bert Stern and arctic seascapes by Camille Seaman.
